Was man über das Shanghai-Upgrade von Ethereum wissen muss

Ethereum ist das nach Marktkapitalisierung zweitgrößte Kryptoasset. Anders als Bitcoin, das eine Bestimmung als digitaler Wertspeicher gefunden hat, ermöglicht das Ethereum-Ökosystem Entwicklern und Nutzern, eigene Anwendungen und intelligente Verträge zu erstellen, die auf der zugehörigen Blockchain ausgeführt werden. Um mit den Anforderungen seiner wachsenden Nutzerbasis Schritt zu halten und auf dem neuesten Stand zu bleiben, wird Ethereum regelmäßig aktualisiert. Nach dem im September 2022 erfolgten «Merge» steht nun ein weiterer Meilenstein bevor: das Shanghai-Upgrade. Es verspricht dem Netzwerk eine Reihe technischer Fortschritte – allen voran aber die Möglichkeit für Ethereum-Besitzer, hinterlegtes (gestaktes) Vermögen wieder abzuheben.
Der Name Shanghai geht auf die 6. „Devcon“, eine der wichtigsten Entwicklerkonferenzen der Ethereum-Community, zurück. Diese aufgrund der Pandemie abgesagte Konferenz hätte 2021 in Shanghai stattfinden sollen – und war Namensgeber für das nächste bevorstehende, große Update von Ethereum, das mehrere wichtige Verbesserungen in puncto Sicherheit, Skalierbarkeit und Benutzerfreundlichkeit bringen soll.

Ethereum wird zum Asset mit laufenden Renditen

Eine wichtige Verbesserung betrifft das sogenannte Staking. Seit dem Merge-Upgrade im September 2022 arbeitet Ethereum vollständig als Proof of Stake (PoS)-System. Das bedeutet, dass Ethereum-Besitzer durch die freiwillige Einlage (das Staken) ihrer Ether-Token (ETH) für den fortlaufenden Betrieb des Netzwerkes sorgen. Die gestakten Token werden zur Validierung von Transaktionen genutzt und wurden dafür für unbestimmte Zeit gesperrt – bis jetzt: Mit dem Shanghai-Upgrade erhalten Staker wieder Zugriff auf ihre Token, wodurch sich eine Reihe neuer Möglichkeiten für Ethereum-Besitzer ergeben. Sie können nun:
  • ETH ohne unbestimmte Sperrfrist staken
  • Durch Staking Belohnungen (rewards) erhalten, die automatisch ausgegeben werden
  • ETH abheben und damit wieder vollen Zugriff auf ihr Guthaben erhalten
  • Ihre ETH nach der Abhebung wieder zum Staking nutzen, um als Validatoren wieder Erträge zu erhalten.

Diese technische Neuerung stellt wohl die bedeutendste Änderung für Ethereum dar, da sich dadurch gleich mehrere neue Perspektiven eröffnen: So ist durch das Staking nicht nur eine laufende Rendite bei Investition in Ethereum möglich, das ETH-Staking wird zum ersten Mal auch bei Investitionen in Krypto-ETPs möglich. Die erwartete Rendite für ETH-Staking liegt bei aktuell rund vier Prozent pro Jahr – vor Abzug von Gebühren und anderen Nebenkosten.

Werden ETH-Abhebungen einen Verkaufsdruck auslösen?

Tatsächlich könnte die Möglichkeit der Abhebungen von gestakten ETH nach dem Shanghai-Upgrade dazu führen, dass einige Validatoren ihre Staking-Bestände und die damit verbundenen Erträge abheben, was einem gewissen Verkaufsdruck gleichkommt. Jedoch wird es nicht für alle Validatoren gleichzeitig möglich sein, ihre Stakes abzuheben. Pro Ethereum Epoche (alle 6,4 Minuten) wird es mindestens 5 Validatoren, jedoch abhängig von der Gesamtzahl der Validatoren, ermöglicht, ihre gestakten ETH abzuheben. Deshalb müssen Validatoren abwarten und es kommt es zu einer sogenannten “Queue”, wodurch ein “Bankrun” auf Ethereum vermieden wird. Insgesamt ist das Upgrade mittel- bis langfristig aus den folgenden Gründen ein Gewinn für Ethereum:
  • Nach aktuellem Stand sind nur rund 15 Prozent des gesamten Ethereum-Vermögens zum Staking hinterlegt.
  • Es ist unwahrscheinlich, dass alle Validatoren ihre Bestände zurückziehen werden. Schließlich haben sie diese zuvor im Wissen über eine unbestimmte Sperrfrist hinterlegt, was bedeutet, dass sie langfristig an das Prinzip und den Erfolg von Ethereum glauben. Man kann also davon ausgehen, dass ein erheblicher Teil dieser Validatoren weiterhin auf Staking setzen wird.
  • Zugleich zeigt die niedrige Staking-Quote von lediglich 15 Prozent, die weit unter der von anderen Proof of Stake-Assets wie z.B. Cardano oder Solana liegt, das sich offenbarende Potenzial: Durch die Möglichkeit der Abhebungen und Staking-Belohnungen von Shanghai ist ein beträchtlicher Anstieg der Einsätze zu erwarten, der sich positiv auf Dezentralisierung, Widerstandsfähigkeit und Sicherheit des Netzwerks auswirken wird.
