Ein Blick in die Zukunft: Die Bitcoin-Adoption von El Salvador

Der 7. September 2021 dürfte als historischer Tag in die Geschichte von Bitcoin eingehen: El Salvador führte als erster souveräner Staat Bitcoin als landesweites gesetzliches Zahlungsmittel ein und hebt das Kryptoasset damit auf eine Stufe mit dem US-Dollar.Kurz zuvor kaufte El Salvador zusätzlich 200 Bitcoin und besitzt damit insgesamt 400 BTC zu einem Gegenwert von 20,4 Millionen Dollar beim aktuellen Bitcoin-Kurs von 51.000 Dollar.
 
Obwohl die Nutzung als Tauschmittel oder Wertanlage optional bleibt, gilt der Präsident von El Salvador als leidenschaftlicher Befürworter von Bitcoin, und unternahm mit der Einführung von Chivo, einer Krypto-Wallet in Regierungsbesitz, einen Schritt Richtung institutionelle Adoption von Kryptoassets. Jeder Chivo-Nutzer soll zum Einstieg Bitcoin im Wert von 30 Dollar erhalten – das entspricht immerhin der Summe, die ein Einzelhandelsmitarbeiter in El Salvador mit einem durchschnittlichen monatlichen Gehalt von 304 Dollar in zwei Tagen verdient.

Bitcoin als Wertanlage

Bei 21Shares sind wir der Ansicht, dass sich Bitcoin selbst in El Salvador noch in einem Embryonalstadium befindet, und mehr Zeit als erwartet bis zur breiten Akzeptanz des Kryptoassets vergehen wird. Das liegt auch daran, dass sich das Land nach wie vor in einer Bargeldwirtschaft befindet, und nur 58 Prozent aller Salvadorianer Zugang zum Internet haben – vergleichbar etwa mit der Internetverbreitungsrate der USA im Jahr 2002. Darüber hinaus ist Bitcoin viel besser als langfristige Wertanlage denn als Zahlungsmittel für den Alltag geeignet, weshalb wir auch erwarten, dass die Salvadorianer Bitcoin in erster Linie als Wertanlage nutzen werden. Zugleich jedoch ist die Verwendung von Kryptoassets als tägliches Zahlungsmittel – in Form von an den US-Dollar gebundenen Stablecoins wie USDC – im zentralamerikanischen Staat überraschend verbreitet – schließlich verzeichnet es Dollar-Zahlungsverkehr in einem Wert von 6 Milliarden Dollar, was rund 20 Prozent des BIP von El Salvador darstellt.

Vorreiterrolle von El Salvador

Unsere These besagt, dass die Krypto-Adoption in El Salvador parallel zu mehreren, anderen Entwicklungen fortschreiten wird: Darunter die wachsende Internetdurchdringung, das wachsende Bewusstsein über den Zugang zu Kryptoassets, und das Erscheinen nutzerfreundlicher und zugleich sicherer Apps, die Wissen zum Thema vermitteln. Zugleich ist die landesweite Nutzung einer einzigen Krypto-App wie Chivo mit möglichen Problemen in den Bereichen der Monopolschaffung und des Datenschutzes verbunden. Deshalb hegen wir die Hoffnung, dass El Salvador auch die zu erwartenden Mitbewerber aus dem DeFi-Sektor begrüßen wird, gerade aufgrund seiner Vorreiterrolle. Schließlich ist der Staat gerade dabei, den Weg für andere Staaten, die an der Einführung von Bitcoin als Zahlungsmittel interessiert sind, zu ebnen. Dazu ist zum Beispiel Panama zu zählen: Erst vorgestern präsentierte Gabriel Silva, ein unabhängiger Parlamentsabgeordneter aus Panama, ein neues „Krypto-Gesetz“, das dem Land dazu verhelfen soll, ein Krypto-freundlicher Innovationsstandort zu werden.
